Why the roof is the hottest surface of your villa
In a Dubai summer the sun hits a flat roof almost vertically for hours. A dark or weathered grey surface absorbs much of that energy and pushes heat into the slab and the rooms below. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory puts a number on it: a clean white roof reflecting 80% of sunlight stays about 31 °C cooler on a typical summer afternoon than a grey roof reflecting 20%.
SRI: the number behind a cool roof
The Solar Reflectance Index combines reflectance and heat emission, from 0 (black) to 100 (white). According to Sorento, Dubai's Al Sa'fat green building system requires new buildings to reach an SRI of at least 78 on most of a flat roof; many existing villas were built before or without that target.
